THE FOREST OF HOPE ON THE MAJESTIC TRUONG SON REGION

THE FOREST OF HOPE ON THE MAJESTIC TRUONG SON REGION

The nature reserve is located in an endemic bird area and is classified within the Central Lowlands Region (Unit 143 – BirdLife 2002). This area includes the lowlands, the transitional hill region of Northern Central and a part of adjacent Central Laos (Stattersfield et al. 1998). This region is a part of the Northern Central fauna zone (Dao Van Tien 1963, Vo Quy 1978). The agricultural ecological zone is located in the latter half of the Northern Central region, in the Central Truong Son area. This is a region evaluated by world conservation organizations as extremely important for biodiversity conservation. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) considers this one of the 200 biodiversity hotspots in the world (Global 200, WWF 2000). BirdLife International assesses it as one of the 62 important and endemic bird areas in Vietnam (BirdLife International 2002). The biogeographical perspectives of authors all suggest that this is an important area for Vietnam’s and global biodiversity. It borders the North Huong Hoa Nature Reserve (Quang Tri province), forming a relatively large contiguous area that will have an important position in Vietnam’s special-use forest system. It can be considered a “Paradise Garden” for the existence of lowland forest ecosystems and animal and plant species, especially large mammals and large bird species.
